Hospitality and the Cost of Living Crisis

Across Africa, rising living costs are placing increasing pressure on individuals and families—especially those working in the hospitality sector.

Household incomes are being stretched by the rising cost of food, transportation, housing, and energy. For many low- to middle-income earners, a large portion of income is already spent on basic needs, leaving little or no savings to absorb unexpected expenses.

Hospitality workers are particularly vulnerable. Many rely on daily or monthly wages that are often unstable, making it difficult to cope with sudden increases in living costs. As a result, individuals are being forced to make difficult financial decisions—cutting back on essential and non-essential expenses, adjusting spending habits, and finding ways to manage limited resources.

Increases in fuel and energy costs have also added to the burden, affecting not only households but also hospitality businesses. This has created a ripple effect across the industry, impacting job security, income levels, and overall wellbeing.

In addition, global economic pressures—including the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation, and disruptions in supply chains—continue to drive up the cost of everyday living.

The result is a decline in real income, meaning that earnings are no longer able to cover the same level of basic needs as before. In many cases, financial support systems and wages have not kept pace with these rising costs.
